Task 4. Arina_Evstigneeva

Hello, everyone!

I'm very glad to see you again on my blog! How're you? I hope that everything is OK :)

So today I'd like to talk with you about Christmas time that's about to come.
By the way, do you want the winter holidays or you don't like these events? As for me, I want it very much right now! Actually, I'm inspired by the falling snow outside. It's fascinating, isn't it?
Moreover, I've read today an article about one house-museum which presents the life of a wealthy family of 18th and 19th centuries and there are a lot of Christmas Decorations of that time.

Dennis Severs HouseThe decorator Dennis Severs bought a four-storey brown brick house in 1979, that built around 1724, and decided to turn it into a special world. Items that are so carefully furnished house, Severs bought for little money at various antique shops.

This Museum is located in London. (here you can see its location and detailed information: Severs' House)

The visitor should tune in to the fact that he came to the house of the Jervis family and French weavers who emigrated to England in 1725.

There are ten rooms here, and they are all furnished differently because they represent different eras and different people. The guest is not explained where someone lives, he can guess at different tips himself.

Food left out in a dining room
The main impression of this walk that the owners somewhere nearby just left the room.

It is possible and necessary to study all subjects thoughtfully – portraits, clothes, furniture. The bottom clearly lived wealthy people, and on the top floor shows the life of weavers in the middle of the XIX century – the silk industry in decline, the family is poor. Dirty, the hole in the ceiling, from the walls, peeling paint, hanging sloppy clothing.

The main condition of being in this house is absolute silence.

"It’s the very absence of texts and explanations that make the house such a contemplative journey."

The motto of the house - "you either see it or not." After this journey visitors are stunned by the experience. What happens during a slow walk through the rooms, it is difficult to describe in words, it is necessary to live and feel by yourself.

I found it quite interesting and I hope that you're too ;)
Would you like to visit it or the mysterious atmosphere is not for you?
I'm really interested in your opinion of that!

By the way, there are some words and collocations that I hope will be useful for you:

  • be stunned - быть ошеломленным, потрясенным чем-то
I'm so stunned that I can only laugh.
  • a weaver - ткач
Her father, a weaver, bought this straw doll on her first birthday.
  • a contemplative (journey) - созерцательное,отстраненное (путешествие, путь )
one of the important features of all his music - it is practically impossible to perceive it in a contemplative way.

Thank you for your attention! See you soon!

  1. Hello Arina,
Thank you for such a thorough explanation of the things you can see and do in this house. Its story is really fascinating and it's great you were able to pass this feeling to your readers. I wish we could go there! I'm sure you'd like to do it too. Have you been to some old castles yourself? What did it feel like?
