Task 4. Valeria Kazachenko
I’m
so happy to see you again on the pages of my blog!
Today I would
like to talk about travelling.
Without a doubt
I can say that I can't imagine my life without travel. It may not be possible
to get out so often, but every trip and every country occupies a separate place
in my heart. A year ago I started learning Italian and I had the opportunity to
visit Italy. I fell in love at first sight. So now, when I saw an article in «The Guardian»
about one of the most fertile regions of Italy, I just could not pass by.
This article is
devoted to a trip to Piedmont, famous for its
truffles, cheese and fine wine, in the most wonderful time -
during the harvest.
Piedmont
is a province of
northwest Italy that remains relatively unknown, despite a rich and important
history.
You can read about
the history of Piedmont and about all details of the trip in the full version.
As soon as the
author of the article arrived in Milan, he immediately hired a car and went to the tiny village of Cortemilia.
«Once
you get off the autostrada the hills open up into a panoply of vineyards and
verdant stretches of rolling, gold-flecked countryside responsible for some of
Italy’s finest wines. » It
is a heaven, isn’t it?
The next day he
met with the owner of the vineyard, Giovanni. The
following day was his annual grape harvest, which he invited him to come and
observe.
The last
destination was Noli, a picturesque village on
the Ligurian riviera.
The author described it in the following way: « As you drive down from the hills
wading through clouds and eventually scudding to a halt at the sea front it’s
as if you’ve entered a different country». I wish I could see it with my own
eyes!
Article
is full of adjectives and very beautiful comparisons. Here are some examples of
words and expressions that I think it is useful to remember:
By the way, that Land of Plenty you told me about,
does it really exist?
A richness that underpins this entire region – богатство, которое лежит в основе всего этого
региона
There’s a richness that underpins this entire region – whether in
culture, natural beauty, hospitality and, certainly, food.
Hospitality – гостеприимство
He and his staff have given new meaning to the words
hospitality, warmth and friendship.
To cling to the soul – западать в душу
We
will leave at the crack of dawn and get back when it’s dark.

Hello Valeria,
ReplyDeleteThanks for such an interesting post devoted to the description of places in Italy the author visited. You were able to express your feelings and emotions about them really well. Thanks!
The only thing about your piece that maybe changed is writing more of it in your own words rather than quoting. It's clear why you wanted to do it but it'd be better if you expressed it in your own words.
Thanks too for sharing the expressions from the article. They are all very commonly used, so it'd be great to remember them.
