A For and Against Essay Aleksandra Ushakova

Should We Give Up Flying?

Planes are the means of transport that helps people to get to the destination really fast. Can you just imagine that just a century ago it took people several days to go from London to New York, and now it takes just 7-8 hours? Isn't it fascinating? For some people it isn't. At least, they don't find flying that good for people. These people are concerned about the ecological situation and the climate changes caused by so called greenhouse effect.

The article that inspired me on writing > to write this essay express (WF) the opinion of people who are against flying. They gave up flying themselves and they are certain about that all the people should follow their example. Their main argument against using the (ART) planes as a means of public transport is the (Art) huge negative impact of flying on the environment. It is a well-known fact that fossil fuels used in planes pollute the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, surplus of which creates the greenhouse effect. Another thing that the (Art) people consider a reason to stop flying is the fact that the (ART) travelling have lost (WNum) its romance of an adventure. So, travelling by plane is something really trivial and usual. There is no adventure in it, and that isn't good, in ART  opinion of members of the flight-free movements.

On the other hand, travelling by plane has its advantages that can't be denied. First of all, it's not that time-consuming as travelling by train or by car is. And time is an exhaustible resource of people's life, so sometimes they can't just afford to waste it on 7 days travelling by train instead of 8 hours flight, for example. It can be surprising, but travelling by plane is way cheaper than road or train trips. In fact, flight from point A to point B helps to avoid all the stops in points C, D and even E during the road trip. These stops are inevitable as people get tired and need to have a shower or just sleep in the horizontal position.  So, flights are faster and cheaper, and what else can people wish in modern society?

All in all, the question of giving up flights or not doing it is left open. There are not so many people who are ready to refuse their comfort in exchange for the environment and its safe > safety. However, I think that people who are ready for a dialogue (ART) can at least cut down the number of their flights a year, or, for example, try not to fly during a month every year. That won't cause any inconveniences and will help to the ecological situation at the same time.

  1. Hello Sasha,

You've written a rather interesting and well-developed essay with persuasive supporting evidence and examples to explain your opinion. I've commented on the problems with the mechanics and the language and hope that you will study them and try to avoid in the future. I hope too that you'll be able to improve your writing skills further based on the foundation laid this academic year.

    Good luck!
