Task_4_Ushakova
Hello everyone!
Do you think that culture is important sphere of our lives? I think, it is very important as it helps people to develop not only their bodies and brains, but also their souls.
I found our latest task very interesting because I've read a lot of articles from cultural section on The Guardian web-site, and it gave me pleasure. Despite there were just plenty of interesting articles I've chosen one that might be interesting for all you too. You can find it here.
We all know that Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" is one of the most popular book in the world, and certainly it is the most popular book of its author's. Harper Lee got a lot of awards for it while she was alive, but the book is still getting its rewards. Recently, in the USA it was included in a list of the most beloved books. Moreover, it took the first place. Interesting that this list cannot be condemned by sexists because seven out of the top 10 novels were written by women like JK Rowling and Jane Austen.
Anyway, this article made me think about my shortlist of books that I like mostly. After long consideration, I wrote it.
Here it is:
- "Nine Stories" D. J. Salinger
- "One Hundred Days of Solitude" G. G. Marquez
- "The Razor's Edge" W. S. Maugham
I will be happy to see your shortlists too. Also, I have a couple of questions for you. Do you consider reading as important part of your life? How do you choose what to read? Is recognition of the author important for you when you choose?
The last but not the least thing is some words that I find useful:
- coming-of-age story ("The Catcher in the Rye" is one of the most famous coming-of-age stories.)
- poll (Polls are very helpful for statistics. )
- companion novel (Harper Lee wrote a companion novel "Go Set a Watchman" that didn't became popular like her first novel.)
- advisory panel (An advisory panel was established to decide which books should be included in the shortlist of the award. )
Hope you find my post a little bit interesting and useful. I'm waiting for your comments with answers on my questions!

ReplyDeleteHello and thank you for sharing your post! I was very pleased to read it because I'm really fond of reading myself and the books your post is devoted to is on the list of my favourites. Salinger's The catcher in the rye is very special for me because it was the first unadapted book I read in English. It was a story, I must admit! It took me 2 h to read the first page! And even though it was really difficult to read, it helped me to learn to read by paying attention to the context and guess the meanings of words. But, of course, in the first place it's the story that fascinated me and still does! It's a great book, and I hope you'll enjoy reading it. It'd be great if you shared your opinion about it when you have done it.
