As you all know, it is not easy to learn foreign languages, especiallly when you start to explore in depth its issues. So we, as specialists, have a great responsibility inasmuch we must not only be able to translate and speak fluently, but also have skills of appealing scientific literature and dictionaries. And today I would like to tell you about the last ones.
So there is a "Golden List" of the dictionaries which every linguist should know. I'm sure that all of you use it very often:
- CAMBRIDGE DICTIONARY I like to use the website. It is a positive place for everyone who learns English. The Cambridge Dictionary gives some of the most used definitions of a word. What I really like there is examples of sentences that make you understand in what context it is better to use a word. There is a record of the pronunciation of the word in the British and American versions, as well as written transcription for each of these options. Also there you can find different collocations, synonims and idioms.
- MACMILLAN DICTIONARY Each word in this dictionary is considered in great detail and from all sides, as in the Cambridge dictionary. Some other interesting features are word's extra usage, cultural and encyclopedic information about it.
- ASSOCIATIVE THESAURUS (G.Kiss), as for me, is a indispensable thing for a student. Thesaurus is one of the most effective tools to describe individual subject areas. This is a dictionary that fully describes all the attributes of a particular language. It's very good for writing essays and letters.
- LONGMAN DICTIONARY is another one I’d recommend. It is the best for students learning English. This dictionary provides lots of handy refernce materials, special in-depth looks at issus such as idioms, phrasal verbs and more.
Thus, dictionaries are our best friends and helpers. However, it is also important to be able to use them correctly and thereby expand your vocabulary. So I hope now you have some thought to digest. I also would like to know what vocabulary is your favourite. I'm looking forward to feedback.
See you on the seminar!
Thank you for sharing your post about your favourite dictionaries and explaining the importance of using them. You've explained rather well what dictionaries you use. I'm interested to learn how you choose which of your dictionaries to use when
