A For and Against Essay. Valeria Kazachenko.
Is it good or bad to be afraid of something?
Most people tend to underestimate the importance of fear as an
emotion in our lives. But that’s one of the most basic things we need for our
survival. Fear keeps us away from doing dangerous things and often keeps us
alive by activating a sense of self-preservation. There are lots of forms of
fear and not all of them are rational. But in general, is it good or bad to be
afraid of something?
To start with, our fears make us weak and vulnerable. Sometimes
they prevent us from achieving our goals, but this is not the worst thing
connecting with fears. Irrational fear is often called a phobia. It makes a
person experience fear in its hardest form without any actual reason for it. It
can be fear of heights, insects, darkness or even silence. Countless number of
phobias was registered by this day and their number is constantly increasing.
Basically, phobia is a disease and to cure it you should visit a doctor. Thus,
our fears have a negative impact on our health.
But lots of people love fear, as it gives them an
enormous amount of adrenaline, which could be quite addictive. And nowadays
there could be found different places to experience fear and get that needed
amount of adrenaline without actually getting hurt. The most popular way is
probably attraction parks, where beside adrenaline one can also have lots of
fun. Also there are such things as racing tracks – there is truly no better
thing for adrenaline and fear than speed! Thus, on the other hand; fear gives
unforgettable feelings and emotions that are good for our health.
Finally, fear is our
most important survival instinct that doesn’t allow us to accidentally hurt
ourselves or get involved in a potentially dangerous situation. Even though
most people associate fear with something bad
and depressing, I believe, that it has pros and cons as everything in our live.
