A reflection note. Torgalo Elisaveta

A Reflection Note Our semester is coming to an end, and therefore I want to leave my impressions about the course of studying academic writing. Firstly, I really liked the format in which our classes were held. Since we live in the modern world, I think it is very important to be able to use and process information on the Internet, and this is exactly what some of our lessons were built on. Thanks to this, I learned to look for the information I need and work with anti plagiarism. Moreover, during this semester there was a lot of practice in writing essays of various types. Because of this, I learned how to structure information and express my thoughts correctly in writing. As for the topics themselves, I really liked the themes that we discussed. They are ver...

A for-and-against essay. Torgalo Eliaveta

Are ebooks so popular and good nowadays?                                                             With the development of digital technology, many physical elements, such as pen and paper, are gradually being replaced by computers and smartphones. But is it really good? Since the creation of "electronic readers" more and more people are turning to the technological side of reading.    One major advantage of e-books is portability. With the recent development of e-book readers, you can take an endless amount of books with you on vacation or on the go. Another great advantage of e-books is that they are chea...

A Reflection Nore. Kseniya Zhilina

A Reflection Note                           The semester is coming to the end, and I would like to say some words about our course. In general, I liked it. Here are some reasons why.              Our regular work with newspaper sources allows me to be aware of the latest world events and problems of our time. Writing summaries of articles helps me to drive the information through myself, to analyze and draw conclusions. I also enjoy reading the works of my peers. Through this I can see how it would be better to build the structure of my essays and also I pay attention to mistakes to avoid them in the future.              The task I liked most was working with materials of the IATEFL conference. I’ve learned what teachers around the world were doing to make their teaching more engaging and effective. So I...

A solution to problems essay. Burdina Elizaveta

Should the service always be friendly? We are living in the era of consumption. There are a lot of shops and cafes everywhere. And if you go to any of them, most likely you will be greeted with a wide smile. But are you sure that this smile is sincere? Because of the crazy competition employers are trying to attract customers in all possible ways. One of them is «the guest is always right» policy. Workers are required to be friendly and inconvenient. Now you can ask «is it so difficult just to be amiable?». And I can say that yes. Just imagine that you have to smile and talk to people for 12 hours every day. In my opinion it is clearly emotional service and it must be forbidden. I am sure that sincere smile is much more pleasant than work smile. And I want to know that if people are smiling at me because they are happy. Of course I do not say that all service should be gloomy and rude. I want to say that people need to show their real emotions and on the work too. Now the situ...

A Reflection note. Cherkasova Maria

This semester , and the year as a whole, passed very quickly. Academic writing taught me a lot. Now I know how to write well-organized essays and summaries of articles.  I really like the idea of writing post. Now my works are available at any time and I can always re-read them. I'm also always interested in the thoughts of others, and it's great that we have the opportunity to read the works of groupmates. We found some websites devoted to some aspect of Writing in English such as http://www.citationmachine.net/ or https://bitly.com/ . Before, I haven't read The Guardian. Now I know that there are a lot of interesting articles. This class got me thinking of many issues, helped me express myself and get acquainted with thoughts of groupmates.

A Reflection Note. Burdina Elizaveta

I would like to start by saying that the academic writing course perfectly complements the program of studying English. Thanks to the course I began to study more about the world and important things by reading interesting articles. It was a big surprise for me that some information I can find only in foreign resources. Moreover, I had a good opportunity to practice my grammar, lexis, reading and of course writing! From this course I learned how to use citation machine and how to write a summary without plagiarism, what I have found useful due to entry of coursework into our program. Sometimes I feel confused because some topics were too wide for me or I have no idea what should I write or how. It will be great if in future we will have more concrete themes or have a discussion before writing. Anyway, I liked the most the idea to share our works with groupmates and learn something new from our topics and thoughts. Also  leaving question in your blog or comme...

A summary essay. Burdina Elizaveta

Hello everyone! Recently I have read an article  about environmental pollution . Well, in short, the article is about how to change your life for nature safety. It introduces to you what is pollution? global warming and etc. What I love the most is that the author gave the reason why we should stop doing some things and show some alternatives. Now I am sure that I am ready to help nature. I think it is vital to correct our mistakes and the mistakes of past generations. Not only for the future people, children, but also for us! Of course I knew some information from other articles and some commercial, for example abot the global warming: how it appeared and why is it dangerous. Anyway, as I said, such short commercial does not give the information how to avoid it. I am only in the beggining and such articles are complex for me, but I think it is very important to understand this topic. Sometimes they use scientific terms and incomprehensible designations, and I have to search...

A Summary of the Article. Maria Cherkasova

Recently, I've read an really interesting article that got me thinking. The article “Alexa, why does the brave new world of AI have all the sexism of the old one?” written by Yomi Adegoke is devoted to the discussion of the problem of feminism.     First, the author draws our attention to women be over-represented in the workforce in industries of assistance: nursing, cleaning, secretarial work and now virtual assistants. She gives an example of research by Unesco that has shown the using of female voices in AI, for example Apple with Siri, is furthering the belief that women are to help men to get on with more important things. Then the author analyzes the world of AI technologies. Robots from the different fantastic and sci-fi films, computer games and books are tend to be coded as male, for example Terminator, Star Wars and RoboCop. She also emphasizes that a male's voice are characterized with power, they are used for leading uprisings,...

A Summary of an Article. Arina Evstigneeva

I've chosen an article from the Guardian on the treatment of pets for this assignment. In my opinion, this topic is one of the most urgent today. (here you can read it ttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/25/love-pets-treat-badly-fail-neglect-dog-killed)          I've never understood people who take animals from shelters and then just heartlessly kick them out to live on the street. I agree with the author of the article, Chas Newkey-Burden, that most people talk with such enthusiasm about how they love and care about their animals, but at the same time allow themselves to leave Pets in need of their care and maintenance for 10 hours or more alone at home without a twinge of conscience.         Besides, it is important to note the euthanization of pets. It is understandable when people want to help an animal that is very sick or/and already old enough and alleviate its suffering. Bu...

A Reflection Note_Potemkina Ekaterina

A Reflection Note    Another semester is almost over, so it's time to take stock. I can confidently say that   I liked the course. And here some reasons why:     First of all, I liked the way we worked. For me, as a person who does not like to write by hand, typing in a blog was not only convenient ,but also interesting. No doubt, my writing skills have improved thanks to this course. This can be seen by comparing my previous works, for example works in the first year, and the current works. Also, I liked that the course was not limited to learning the strict rules of writing in English . I think everyone will agree with me that while studying, it is difficult to find time just to read, not a textbook, but something that you are really interested in. But this course gave me such an opportunity.   As part of my homework, I read about interesting events, news that happened in the world, and then shared my impressions with my classmates. So, I ...

A Beautiful Time of Carelessness                    Childhood is the beginning of a person’s life. Unfortunately, not for all people it was or is a wonderful time for various reasons, but for most, it is a collection of pleasant memories until the end of life. So what is childhood for a person? Let us speculate about it.                    Firstly, this is a time of dreams and carelessness. Childhood, filled with games, magical fantasies and pranks, can be called happy. As a child, you rejoice in such simple things as the first snow or slightly frozen puddles on which you can jump. And how do children enjoy the New Year? It is always interesting to watch with what excitement they expect gifts that Santa Claus will bring at night through the window leaf and how they try to behave well to get the desired toys. Everyone has bright colourful moments that he or she keeps in his he...

An opinion essay - Alina Isaeva

We owe ecology an apology    Nowadays there are numerous heated debates related to environmental issues while our vulnerable planet is suffering from destructive human activities. Some people claim that we should blame only ourselves and try to improve the current ecological situation for the better. However, others take nature’s gifts for granted and do not want to take action in its salvation.    I support those people who think that we need to save the Earth. To begin with, a lot of factories and vehicles emit poisonous chemicals like carbon monoxide into the air. This results in acid rains which damage everything. Moreover, pesticides used in crop spraying release harmful agrochemicals that are deposited in the soil. Last but not least, accidents involving oil tankers pollute the water and kill the animals by destroying their natural habitats.    In contrast, there are some people who consider all these disastrous problems as the obligate conse...

A Reflective Note - Alina Isaeva

A Reflective Note The semester is coming to the end, and I would like to share with you my impressions about this course. In general, I liked this course. I found it very interesting to discuss the topics about plastic surgery and about the differences between education at school and at university and to watch the video from IATEFL conference.  Also, it was important to analyze the essays that you offered us to check it out and correct the errors. It helped me avoid my own mistakes and better understand the structure of the sentences. To learn how to distinguish words that are used in the formal and informal style was very useful. It was unusual for me to blog this academic year because I had never done it before, but it was interesting and effective.    I can't say that something in our activity was useless. Our exercises and tasks were important and helpful. I would like to propose such topics for discussion as work abroad, contemporary art and environmental ...

A Final Essay by Vera Murashova

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/apr/20/pet-cloning-is-already-here-is-human-cloning-next Human Cloning or How to Kill the Civilization Recently I have read an article about cloning where the author, after making a deep research, finds out that there are lots of companies which nowadays make money on cloning dogs, horses, and bulls. Moreover, some people are still working on human cloning; and here is what Zhang, one of the most popular modern scientists, says about it: “… if you are asking me, ‘Can you improve the efficiency even more?’ Well, the answer is yes. My answer is that eventually, from a technology point of view, human cloning will be possible.” This seemingly harmless phrase shocked me and pushed to write this essay. To begin with, let us see the definition of “human cloning”. It is “the creation of a genetically identical copy of an existing, or previously existing, human being or growing cloned tissue from that individual,” as it is written in...

A Summary by Vera Murashova

Hello everyone! Recently I have read a very intriguing and provocative article devoted to a new album of Jamila Woods:  https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/may/10/jamila-woods-legacy-legacy-review-jagjaguwar This album is called “Legacy! Legacy!”    As indicated by its title, the main idea is to show a loving testimony to  black   artists , where each track title is named after historical figures (such as Frida, Basquiat, Giovanni, and so on). Therefore, I came up with the idea that the problem of racism is still up-to-date. I personally think that in our modern 21-century society it is rather absurd to divide people into “blacks” and “whites”. Moreover, we are not to judge a human being’s mind by its appearance. Next, what is also interesting is that in one of her songs, Jamila Woods mentions a word “different” in a positive way, she says: "I am different, I am, I am," and it’s easy to agree, because she is so wise and brave women ...

A Reflection Note by Vera Murashova

A Reflection Note T o begin with, I’d like to say that the academical writing course has changed a lot. (In spite of   the fact that I have missed  some classes.) It tought me to write essays correctly, to share my thoughts freely, to think in unusual, creative way, and so on.  Here are some of my ideas: It was very useful to work with different topics which are not connected with the   university and studying.  Frankly speaking, sometimes it was difficult to understand how to make out some   works in a correct way; however,  academical writing course helped me to avoid these problems .   Moreover, I would like to read the essays  I wrote one year  ago and try to find different mistakes.  After this course  I got to know how to use the citation machine, how to  incorporate quotes and lots of other interesting and helpful things. And I would like to practic e more to develop my writing. By t...

A Reflection Note Aleksandra Ushakova

Reflection Note  The semester has just ended and it's time to express my opinion about it. To begin with, this semester passed really fast and there were really a lot of lessons missed due to some circumstances. So, we didn't do a lot of work. However, even from the tasks we've done I learned something new and interesting. For example, as we wrote some summaries on different articles from the Guardian, I think I finally understood how to do it correctly and how to avoid some mistakes that can appear in it.  As for some topics we discussed, I was really interested in the topics about education in other countries. I think it is rather useful information for us as we are future linguists and we are to communicate with people of different nations and cultures, so this information can help us to understand the background of those people. To write a summary on the presentation from a conference was really interesting too. Not only did I practice my skills on writing summa...

A For and Against Essay Aleksandra Ushakova

Should We Give Up Flying?  Planes are the means of transport that helps people to get to the destination really fast. Can you just imagine that just a century ago it took people several days to go from London to New York, and now it takes just 7-8 hours? Isn't it fascinating? For some people it isn't. At least, they don't find flying that good for people. These people are concerned about the ecological situation and the climate changes caused by so called greenhouse effect.  The article  that inspired me on writin g > to write this essay express (WF) the opinion of people who are against flying. They gave up flying themselves and they are certain about that all the people should follow their example. Their main argument against using the (ART) planes as a means of public transport is the (Art) huge negative impact of flying on the environment. It is a well-known fact that fossil fuels used in planes pollute the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, surplus of whi...

A Reflexion Note. Valeria Kazachenko.

A Reflexion Note Our course is coming to an end and I would like to write some impressions about it.  In general, I always like most of the topics and tasks that are offered to us. This semester the most interesting and useful task for me was related to watching ART video from the conference and writing an article on this topic. It was interesting to listen to the lectures of these people. It was useful both for the development of listening and writing skills. Overall, thank you for this course, which has broadened my horizons, thanks to > TOO FOR the diverse topics we have worked on.

A For and Against Essay. Valeria Kazachenko.

Is it good or bad to be afraid of something? Most people  tend to underestimate the importance of fear as an emotion in our lives. But that’s one of the most basic things we need for our survival. Fear keeps us away from doing dangerous things and often keeps us alive by activating a sense of self-preservation. There are lots of forms of fear and not all of them are rational. But in general, is it good or bad to be afraid of something? To start with, our fears make us weak and vulnerable. Sometimes they prevent us from achieving our goals, but this is not the worst thing connecting with fears. Irrational fear is often called a phobia. It makes a person experience fear in its hardest form without any actual reason for it. It can be fear of heights, insects, darkness or even silence. Countless number of phobias was registered by this day and their number is constantly increasing. Basically, phobia is a disease and to cure it you should visit a doctor. Thus, our fears have a...

A reflection note. Valeria Koshechkina

A reflection note       So, this semester is coming to the end and I can draw some conclusions on this course.      Most of all I liked the activity with the conference, where we had to listen to professors and write down the information that we learned. I love such tasks because they are interesting and very useful both in listening skills and in writing.      What seems to me useless is to write an essay on construction, because it’s not interesting and you have boundaries that don't allow you to write freely.      I would like more activities similar to the conference that we did on psychological topics.
